Vietnam will send two representatives to the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Future Stars tournament to be held in Singapore from October 17 to 20.

Dao Thu Uyen will take part in the U14 competition, while Nguyen Thu Phuong will compete in the U16 contest.

Hanoian Phuong, 15, was the runner-up in the national U16 category and is currently ranked 1,750 in the Junior ITF ranking.

Last year, she was placed third at the ATF U14 & Under development Championships.

Uyen from HCM City has been concentrating full-time on her professional career at the Sporting Training Centre No 2. She is the No 10 seed at the national U14 tournament and a quarter-finalist in the National Junior Championships' U16 singles event.

VN players to participate in Future Stars tournament

The first-ever WTA Future Stars event is part of the lead-up to the Junior Road to Singapore event. Tennis players from the above-mentioned age groups from 12 Asia-Pacific countries will participate in the tournament.

It is being organised with the aim of promoting high-level development of the players and the health, fitness, and empowerment of women through tennis.

The girls will battle it out in a four-day mini tournament, with the finals to be held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, where the WTA Finals will take place.

The players will also rub shoulders with some of the best global tennis players during their trip and enjoy all access at the most highly anticipated sporting event in the Asia-Pacific region.

"The introduction of the WTA Future Stars junior tournament series is aimed at encouraging young girls throughout the Asia-Pacific region to become active through tennis," said WTA Finals Tournament Director Melissa Pine.

"For more than four decades, WTA players have served as role models and as an inspiration for the future generation of young girls worldwide. We look forward to introducing the future stars to the stars of today and tomorrow at the WTA Finals in Singapore."

In addition to their on-court experience, each WTA Future Stars player will participate in a community project in their local market. The winners who qualify to play in Singapore will participate in community service activity during the WTA Finals.

To be held at the state-of-the-art US$1.3-billion Singapore Sports Hub from October 17 to 26, the WTA Finals features competitions between the world's top eight female singles and doubles categories.

Singapore is the ninth city to stage the WTA Finals, and this is the first time that an Asia-Pacific city is hosting the tournament.
