A conference on official statistics opened in Danang on October 8 by the International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS), providing a good chance for domestic and international statisticians to share experience and develop cooperative ties.
The three-day conference deals with three main topics: meeting increasing expectations from users within resources – how to do more with less?, exploiting new technologies and new data sources, and building partnerships to enhance the value of official statistics.
At the opening ceremony, Director-General of the Vietnam General Statistics Office (GSO) Nguyen Bich Lam highly appreciated the IAOS's active contributions to the development of official statistics globally for many years.
He affirmed that official statistics is one of important information sources for law-makers and investors in developing and issuing development policies for each field and socio-economic development policies in each country.
Lam added that the event offers a good chance for Vietnamese statistics offices to get involved in many more forums. In recent years, official statistics in many countries and territories in the world have been increasingly completed and advanced information technology and techniques have been applied, meeting changes, socio-economic development and increasing demands of information users.
The Vietnamese statistics sector strives to better implement the statistics development strategy in 2011-2020 with a vision to 2030 which was approved by the Prime Minister with the aim of improving statistics capacity, Lam said.
The IAOS was established in 1985. It holds international conference biennially at member countries. It is a forum for statistics officials, scientists, and international organisations to share experience in management and professionals for the development of statistics.
