Previously at 7pm on May 7 2011, Son hid a knife inside of him with an intent to rob someone. Son called up xe om driver V.T.N to take him from district 10 to district 2 for a fee of VND80,000 (US$4).

When they arrived in district 2, Son directed N. to drive into an empty alley with a purpose to rob him.

When N. heard a strange noise and turned back, Son had already taken out the knife to subdue him.

After searching N.’s body, Son could only find VND20,000 and 1,000 Indonesian Rupiahs (10 cents).

Unable to drive the motorbike, Son left N.’s bike and fled with less than a buck.

N. soon drove to a nearby police station and reported the case.

The police later seized Son when he was walking back home.

According to police indictment, Son immigrated to America as an American child in 1993 and lived in Oakland, California. End of 2001, Son went back to Vietnam but did not live in a stable place.

Previously, he was convicted twice for stealing a total of VND14.1 million (US$700).
